The majority of people tend to use and abuse the word: “alcoholic”. The truth of the matter is that for people who are really suffering, this is a life or death disease. Due to the fact that alcohol is legal; it may be harder to establish the difference between who is an alcoholic and who is a heavy social drinker. You need to be aware of the fact that alcoholism may also be known as alcohol dependence, which actually may be classified as a disabling addictive disorder.

If you or someone you love is suffering from alcoholism then the best way to get help, is to first admit they have a problem. Next, they have to enter a program at a reputable alcohol rehabilitation center. At this center the person will not be allowed to touch any alcohol at all, as well as any other substances. The problem of cross addiction is very common, where an alcohol or addict will cross over to another substance once they are clean from their substance of choice e.g. alcohol.

There are many reasons why an alcohol rehabilitation center is the way to go:

1. There are set rules and regulations which the patient is meant to follow.
2. The patient may have tried several times on their own to stop drinking without any levels of success only having returned to their old patterns.
3. By entering into a rehabilitation centre this eliminates the patient’s exposure to alcohol and thus the patient has less chance of relapse.
It is very important to be aware of the fact that rehabilitation is not the end of the journey. In fact there is usually a treatment program set out for the client to follow once they have completed rehab. This may include attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, which are based on the twelve steps. It is imperative that the client follows the twelve steps and get a sponsor.

It is extremely important that a person addicted to alcohol enters a rehabilitation program because he or she carries a high risk of physical symptoms, caused by alcohol. Some may include, but are not limited to epilepsy, heart disease, nutritional deficiencies and cirrhosis of the liver. This is besides the psychological consequences alcoholism may have on, not only the alcoholic himself, but also the family and friends of the person.
